Why should I attend?

The defined benefit pension transfer market has undergone considerable change in the last few years, and it feels like the market has been chasing its tail off the back of pension freedoms. Now the regulatory changes seem to have settled, we’ll use this workshop as a chance to look at the defined benefit market, look at the context that prompted the changes, exactly what the changes were and how to effectively continue to provide quality advice in this area.

We’ll cover:

  • Triage.
  • Abridged.
  • Non-contingent charging.
  • KYC.
  • Attitude to transfer risk.
  • Cashflow.
  • APTA & TVC.
  • Suitability report one-page summaries.

During this half-day session, we’ll look at best practices and how your files need to look from both a client and a compliance perspective.

Royal London – DBAAT examples of unsuitability

The DBAAT, released in January 2021 is the tool the FCA uses to assess the suitability of pension transfer advice. While the DBAAT demonstrates the FCA areas of focus, this presentation cross-references these areas of focus with the content of the DBAAT instruction manual and FG21/3, both of which are FCA documents released in conjunction with the DBAAT itself.

Throughout this presentation, Royal London considers each of the examples of unsuitability listed in the DBAAT to gain an understanding of why the regulator deemed these unsuitable, and direct delegates to further information contained in the supporting documents.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Identify common shortcomings in investment advice related to pension transfers.
  • Identify common shortcomings in assessing suitability for a pension transfer.
  • Describe the sources of additional guidance available when advising on pension transfers.
